Granny!

I've finally made a granny square blanket. I've wanted to for a while so when a dear friend had her third baby earlier this year, I leapt at the chance to make one for him.

I made one big giant granny square - I used this Lion Brand pattern.

To finish off, I used this edging from the wonderful attic24 blog.

I realised a couple of things about my craft. I'm very very slow at crocheting. I thought I could whip this blanket up so quickly but I am so very slow! Need to work on that!

The Household Guide to Dying - A review

A good friend of mine recommended The Household Guide to Dying to me a couple of years ago. I have only just gotten around to reading it!

I'm not sure what I expected this book to be about. I should have guessed it was about dying from the title, but somehow, I decided the title was a metaphor....so when I started reading and realised the book was about a 37 year old dying mother I thought the book would make me fall to pieces. How could a book about such an emotive topic not get me down?

Well, it did get me down, a bit. But it also kept me enthralled, gave me hope, filled me with amazement at the power of love. In the end, I did enjoy this book, the characters were very likeable and engaging, the story line quirky and fun at the same time as being serious and meaningful.

The narrator's relationships with her daughters and her determination to leave a legacy for them was heart rending, but beautiful at the same time. Her acceptance of her own death was very moving. Delving into her back story was really interesting.

Definitely will read more by Debra Adelaide!

Australian Women Writers 2012 Reading and Reviewing Challenge

Am I up to the challenge? I think so.

I plan to do the Australian Women Writers challenge this year. I'm aiming to get to the Franklin-Fantastic level and in terms of genre, I plan to be a "Devoted eclectic".

Coincidentally, I finished off 2011 by reading a book called "Shifting Fog" by Kate Morton - which I loved, so I am quite looking forward to this challenge!

I have started well - half way through January and I have already completed my first book - "Me and Mr Booker" by Cory Taylor. Stay tuned for a review soon!
